Pro Tips for Tests

Tests are very important because they can help teachers know what you are struggling on or what they may need to spend more time on.  Tests can also help you as a student realize what your strengths and weaknesses are in an area so that you can improve.  Even though tests are not the most fun thing to do, they can help you in many ways.

 Get Some Sleep!

  • The first tip for acing a test is to get as much sleep as possible.  I find that getting sleep helps me to focus more and retrieve the information in my head that is needed on the test.  It is important to be able to focus because when we don’t focus, we tend to make a lot of silly mistakes.  These mistakes could cost us a lot and be the difference between an A and a B.  I promise that once you start getting more sleep, you will be able to tell a difference in your performance on tests and many other grades in class.

Read Carefully!

  • It is always best to read everything carefully.  It is very easy to misunderstand what a question is asking, and it is a simple fix to just go back over it and read it again.  I find that when I take my time reading everything, I get better grades than when I just simply skim over it.  Teachers like to trick us a lot because they know that we do not read carefully.  In order to prove them wrong and get the answer correct, simply show them that you cannot be fooled!  Read, read, read!!

Show Your Work!

  • While this tip does not work for every subject, I find that it does help me a lot in math and chemistry.  When I do not understand something, I like to work it out and see where I am going wrong.  It is also important to show your work so that the teacher can understand where you started to mess up and can help you.  Also, some teachers are very strict about showing work, so you don’t want to miss any unnecessary points because you didn’t show your work.  Do this tip and you will be on your way to an A in no time!

Stay Calm!

  • Tests can be stressful, but just remember to stay calm.  I know that it is very easy to freak out when the test is handed out, but if you stay calm, you will have a higher chance of making a better grade.  I have a bad habit of getting nervous about tests but have learned that it does me no good.  When I get nervous, all it does is make me forget all the information that was in my head about the test.  That causes a whole domino effect of more nerves, so it is best to just keep a calm, cool mind.  Then, you can ace the test!

Go Back Over the Test!

  • After finishing the test, go back over it and make sure that you have chosen the correct answers.  This is especially helpful if you are filling out a Scan-tron along with the test because it is easy to get off track and mark the wrong answer.  Make sure that you are satisfied with every single answer before you turn it in.  This is the time where you can catch little errors that you might have done earlier on the test.  I find that it is easier to understand some of the harder questions after I have finished the whole test, so this is when I go back and re-work those questions.

I used to struggle taking tests in high school until I figured out a way to properly take a test.  These tips have helped me tremendously!  If you follow these five tips like I did, you will be taking tests like a pro in no time!
