Interview with Coach Scoggins

Coach Scoggins teaches History and coaches volleyball and soccer.

1) What made you want to teach and coach at Pearl?

I have always heard many great things about Pearl High School and I was ready for my next big challenge.  I want to excel in my teaching and coaching career and I believe that Pearl High School is the place to do that.

2) What made you want to teach what you teach and coach what you coach?

I have always had a great passion for History and the many things that we can learn from History.  As far as coaching soccer and volleyball, I grew up playing soccer in middle and high school so I have always had a great passion for the sport.  Volleyball was a bit different: the first time I coached volleyball, I knew nothing about the sport (4 years ago) but after going through my first year and learning on my own I have grown passionate about it!

3) Where did you go to college and what did you study there?

I graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi with a Social Studies education degree.

4) How long have you been teaching/coaching?

I have been coaching and teaching for the past 4 years.  This is the start of my fifth year.

5) Who in your life inspired you to be a teacher/coach?

My biggest inspiration for teaching would be my senior English teacher in high school, Mrs. Guy.  She was able to inspire all of her students.  She did not care if we were the best, but she did want us to always give 100% not just in school but also in life.  I think my biggest inspiration for my coaching career would be a great friend of mine, Coach Crews.  He taught me what it means to be a caring individual and coach.  You have be tough on the athletes but you also have to show them that you actually care about their success in life.

6) Where are you from originally and where did you go to school?

I am originally from McComb, MS, and I graduated from Parklane Academy.

7) What do you like to do outside of work and on the weekends?

Outside of work, I love to read comics, play my PS4, watch Netflix, play pick-up games of soccer (or anything outdoors), and hang out with my wife and child.

8) Where is the most fascinating place you have been to and why?

Most fascinating place I have ever been is the Grand Canyon.

9) What is your favorite TV show, Movie, and Song?

TV Show: Supernatural/My Hero Academia; Movie: Red Dawn (1980s); Song: “Papercut” by Linkin Park.

10) What are the most interesting facts about you?

I am a massive nerd but I also love sports.  I love TV shows like My Hero Academia and I love all DC comic books.  I also follow a ton of sports.  I am a massive Saints and Braves fan.  My favorite basketball player is Anthony Davis.
