Feature Teachers: Laurallii Castro

In honor of the dramatic increase in new teachers for the 2018-2019 school year, The Pirate Speaks newspaper has chosen a few new teachers to be highlighted as the featured teachers. One of those is Laurallii Castro, a Spanish teacher with roots in the Pearl community.

Mrs. Castro is a Spanish teacher at Pearl High School and she helps out with the Foreign Language Club. She also graduated from PHS in 2010. When asked what her hobbies and interests are, she replied with, “I love being with my husband and daughter, traveling, seeing new places, trying new things, watching HGTV, Cops, or Friends, learning about history, cultures and languages, improving my Spanish, reading, and exercising.”

She attended Hinds Community College for one year, but graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi with a Bachelors in History Education and a minor in Spanish. She is currently working on her Masters in Teaching Languages, specifically English as a Second Language. She also expects to graduate in December 2018.

She was a little hesitant to work at her old high school. She says, “I didn’t want to be judged as the same person I was in high school, but God opened a door at the perfect time here at Pearl High School. I had forgotten how much I was loved by my former teachers (and community) but rediscovered this since returning as a teacher. It has been a wonderful experience so far.”

If she weren’t teaching here, she would be teaching English in a Latin American country to kids or adults, or she would like to be a social worker who helps Spanish speaking immigrants adjust to the U.S. An interesting story that she chose was that she met her husband in Costa Rica on a spontaneous vacation. She ended up marrying him a year later. She says he is the half that she always searched for or “mi media naranja.”
