Every year, The Pirate Speaks newspaper staff likes to help the school get to know our new teachers by featuring them in their own articles. English teacher, Mrs. Smith, is one of the many new faces here at Pearl High School and there is plenty to learn about her.

Mrs. Smith, initially from Senatobia, Mississippi, has been teaching for six years, and taught her first four years at South Panola High School. She also taught one year at Independence High School, but moved to Ridgeland due to her husband, a professional chef, getting a job opportunity in Jackson. Now working at Pearl High School, Mrs. Smith says, “This is by far my favorite place I have worked. The staff, students, and community are wonderful, and have made me feel welcomed from day one.”

At the Mississippi University for Women, Mrs. Smith recieved her Bachelor of Arts degree in English and minored in American Studies and also has her Associates degree in Liberal Arts. Now, she is working on getting her M. Ed. in Educational Leadership from Mississippi College. Mrs. Smith is also a freelance writer and copywriter and when asked why she became a teacher, Mrs. Smith said that she loves to help students with career and college planning. She also likes to help students with reaching their goals and potential.

A few interesting things about Mrs. Smith are that she trained in dance for fourteen years, and she played the block and banjo in a washboard band. She was also asked if she were an animal, what would she be? and she replied with, “I would say if I were an animal, I would be a Macaw. They are intelligent and inquisitive.”
